“Faggot Fertility Center” is what the internet web site “Queerty” calls a Los Angeles-based in-vitro fertilization clinic. It’s real name is “The Fertility Institutes” (it has branches in Las Vegas and Mexico), and its claim to fame has been a 100% success rate in sex selection “in over 2,400 cases.” It now has the distinction of becoming the first one-stop fertility center for homosexual couples.

"There are a lot of centers that dibble and dabble in this. But we are the only program for gay men that has psychological, legal, medical, surrogates, donors and patients all taken care of in one place," The Fertility Institutes’ director Dr Jeffrey Steinberg told Reuters (March 14).

And Steinberg’s new business angle is probably lucrative, for as he told Reuters, “the demand is incredible,” especially “from abroad.” Steinberg has treated about 70 homosexual male couples; 40% have been American with the rest coming from Great Britain, Germany, China, Canada, Italy, Brazil, and South Africa.

The Fertility Institutes offers two sex-selection methods. The first, with a “99.99%” success rate, uses embryos resulting from sperm analyzed for their sex. With a “pre-implanted genetic diagnosis,” the embryos are tested to determine if they have genetic disorders and for their sex. Only the “embryo(s)” of the desired sex are returned to the mother for implantation. The second method involves “manipulation of the sperm” to increase the number of sperm carrying either an X or Y chromosome. It has a lower success rate and uses technology that “is deemed experimental and is provided only under an investigational research protocol,” according to The Fertility Institutes.

About 75% percent of homosexual couples taking advantage of Steinberg’s services opt for the sex-selection procedure. But their choices have surprised Steinberg. "We thought they were all going to come in and want boys,” he said, “but about 65 percent want male and the others want girls."
