The safe sex awareness campaigns in Shanghai reflect the Chinese government's nationwide push for increased HIV/AIDS awareness. According to government sources, the state spends more than 200 million yuan annually on AIDS prevention and claims the disease "has infected at least 840,000 people" within the country of 1.3 billion.
